It is important to follow the instructions for each specific brand of hair extensions.

Each brand of extensions is subject to a huge variation in processing methods.

The following instructions have been derived from years of testing by SALONS that only use our hair.

AFTERCARE

The Aftercare page adds to our Terms and Conditions.

It is important to follow the aftercare instructions for any hair extensions brand you choose. The hair extension industry is subject to a wide range of processing methods. Each brand of hair extensions can have unique characteristics and behave in a different way.

These aftercare instructions were developed using our years of experience in hair extensions production and product testing with highly skilled hair extensionists Jo Stacey, and Tom Piper.

Salon Aftercare Tips

LaviniaWigs hair extensions can be washed, dried and straightened in the same way as natural hair. Hair extensions can become damaged by chemicals in hair care products and heat during styling. Proper aftercare will extend the life expectancy of your hair extensions.

Except for “Virgin”, all hair is dyed with different hair dyes. Sometimes, hair dye may not wash out after the first few washes. This is normal and can also happen with natural hair after a coloring service. This is not a problem, but it can cause allergic reactions in people who have sensitive skin to the dye. We don’t claim that LaviniaWigs hair extensions are suitable for people with allergies to dyes.

The Salon must conduct allergy testing prior to fitting. This should include testing for allergic reactions to tape adhesives or metal rings. You can do patch testing during your consultation. Alternatively, you could have a few rings fitted before the full fitting so that you can observe allergic reactions. If a customer experiences an allergic reaction to our products, we do not offer refunds.

We offer step-by-step aftercare advice for clients. However, we want to bring to the attention salon owners and hairdressers several common issues we encounter. These issues can be avoided and explained to clients to make sure they are understood. Additional information can be found in the terms and conditions for our guarantee.

The guarantee only applies if you can inspect the hair extensions in person, and then return them to us if necessary. Clients who live outside the United States may not be eligible for our guarantee.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: Our hair will not matt or bunch up. The following exclusions and warnings address common problems that can result from high-quality hair extensions bleaching. This bleaching process can lighten naturally dark hair to nearly white without causing any damage. This is the only way to achieve blondes that are light and high-quality. Although the process causes minimal hair damage, it is important to take extra care to preserve the delicate color of the final product.

DISCOLORATION OF BLONDE EXTENSIONS

Hair extensions, especially blonde ones, can become discoloured over time or be exposed to different environmental factors. This includes standard beauty products and even some hair extensions. Avoid hair extensions coming in contact with sun protection creams or false tanning products. The hair can become pink/peach/copper if it comes in contact with these products, particularly if they are combined with high-mineral content water from abroad (such as swimming pool water or seawater). The extensions react to minerals and cause this colour change.

A Malibu C treatment can often remove the minerals and correct any discoloration. The discoloration may become more severe if it is not treated promptly or if the hair is exposed to seawater/swimming pool water. A quick remedy for discolouration that occurs on vacation is to soak the hair in lemon juice for 30 mins. However, it will require a good conditioner afterwards.

Clients should consider switching to older hair extensions when they travel. Clients can also use the ‘Swimming & Holidays’ guide we provide below if this is not possible. Before a fitting, ensure your client is aware that hair extensions can cause discoloration. If this happens, they will not be replaced or refunded.

Blondes can become more discoloured during the summer months. This could be due to a variety of factors, including hard water areas, well water, and cosmetics or chemicals that are used during warmer months. The treatment for this discoloration is the same as the one described above. Often, a Malibu C treatment will be enough to eliminate the problem. We ask that clients are made aware that the discoloration is not due to extensions’ fault. If an extension fails, they will not be eligible for a replacement or refund.

It is important to note that certain brands of Argan oil may contain artificial colours which can stain hair. This is especially true when the oils are heated. Our website offers safe blonde argan oil.

CONSULTATION

When a client books a consultation with a salon to discuss their options for hair extensions fitting, a Hair Extensions Consultation is held.

The Salon evaluates the client’s hair and colour, and then discusses any suitable options. The client has not yet committed to the fitting. Therefore, the consultation is the best time to inform the client about possible issues that they might encounter with extensions.

Clients must be made aware of their responsibility to prevent these problems by following proper aftercare. This consultation allows the client to take time to think and make informed decisions.

The consultation should include an explanation of the total cost for extensions. All costs related to aftercare, refitting, and removal should be included. The hair extensions require regular maintenance and refitting. Sometimes, this is necessary in the case of an accident. Clients should consider whether or not they have the financial means to cover any unexpected costs. They may not be a suitable candidate for Hair Extensions.

Our terms and conditions provide additional information about the production of hair extensions. We believe that it is important to share as much information as possible with clients in order to manage their expectations and help them make informed decisions.

APPLICATION

Mixing different brands of Hair Extensions can lead to tangling or matting. To avoid any damage to clients’ natural hair, LaviniaWigs Hair Extensions must only be used by qualified and insured professionals.

Before applying extensions, hair should be dry and clean. Before extensions are applied, natural hair should be cleaned with a deep cleanser. Conditioners and other styling products, such as heat protectors, hair sprays, or serums, should not be used on natural hair. These products can cause the rings or bonds to slip and should be avoided before fitting.

MAINTENANCE

New clients will be offered a two-week follow up appointment by most stylists to examine the bonds and extensions for any problems. It’s normal for some bonds to be lost; these can be re-fitted at this appointment.

Natural hair grows approximately 1/2 inch per month. Extensions will require refitting as the roots become shorter. Maintenance appointments can be scheduled between 4-12 weeks, depending on the type and condition of extensions.

Aftercare advice for clients

LaviniaWigs hair extensions can be washed, dried and straightened in the same way as natural hair. Hair extensions can become damaged by chemicals in hair care products and heat during styling. Proper aftercare will extend the life expectancy of your hair extensions.

Except for “Virgin”, all hair is dyed with different hair dyes. Sometimes, hair dye may not wash out after the first few washes. This is normal and is possible with natural hair after a colouring service. This is not a problem, but it can cause allergic reactions in people who have sensitive skin to the dye. We don’t claim that LaviniaWigs hair extensions are suitable for people with allergies to dyes.

Washing:

  • After bonds have been placed, inform the client to not wash their hair for 48-hours. This will allow bonds to settle. The longer you can wait, the better.
  • To ensure that the adhesives last longer, advise clients to wait 48 hours before washing Tape Extensions. They may become brittle or break if they are washed after 48 hours.
  • Don’t wash your Hair Extensions daily. Dry shampoo can be used if you have to.
  • To minimize tangling, brush your hair after washing.
  • Clients are advised to wash their Hair Extensions in a shower and not in the bathtub or over a sink.
  • To reduce tangling, gently apply shampoo in an upwards motion.
  • Before you use the conditioner, rinse off shampoo. Be careful not to get into the roots or bonds.

Drying

  • Do not sleep, or tie your hair up in a bun while Hair Extensions are still wet. They will mat together.
  • Don’t towel dry hair extensions using a scrubbing motion. To remove excess moisture, you can blot the hair with a towel.
  • Don’t let hair extensions dry naturally. Moisture can cause damage to the bonds/tapes, and they may fall out. The Hair Extensions will also be affected by the moisture. The heat seals the hair cuticle, giving it a sleek appearance. Hair Extensions should be blow dried and then straightened gently using a thermal protector made for extensions.
  • After washing your hair, dry the Tapes/ Keratin bonds/ Rings with a hair dryer. Use a low or cool setting to avoid damaging the tape and bonds.

Brushing is a good idea.

  • If hair extensions are not brushed, they will become matte.
  • To avoid pulling too hard or snagging, use a soft-bristled brush.
  • Never over-brush hair extensions when they are wet. Wet hair is more susceptible to breaking and becoming fragile. For wet hair, a wide tooth comb should be used.
  • Use a detangling spray if needed. Do not pull extensions that are tangled. Instead, gently brush the ends and work your way up.
  • Brush Hair Extensions from root to tip. The sections above the micro ring/ bond will grow with natural hair, and must be separated to prevent matting.
  • Do not backcomb your hair.

When Styling:

  • If you curl or straighten Hair Extensions, be careful not to heat them. They will melt if they are too close.

*Important reminder* Real Human Hair Extensions are heat-styleable at the same temperature as your hair. (Light blondes will be exempted from this rule). These extensions are not synthetic and won’t melt. However, high temperatures can cause colour to fade just like your hair color.

*Exception for Light Blondes This can be difficult to fix due to heat, and may require several bleaching or toning treatments. This should be avoided by using temperatures below 160C on blondes. Heat protection products are also recommended.

REGULAR AFFTERCARE

  • Separate the bonds regularly. If hair sheds naturally every day, it can get trapped in the bonds and cause them to melt together. This step is often skipped and can lead to matted areas that are difficult to brush out, which can cause hair loss.
  • Extension hair is not oily like human hair. It does not receive oils from the scalp. This means that it needs to be nourished with special products to make hair silky. It should be done once per week.
  • You should only use the highest quality products that are compatible with your brand’s Hair Extensions. For best results, we recommend using professional colour care products.
  • To avoid matting, keep your hair loosely pinned or in a ponytail. This will allow you to play sports and minimize the amount of brushing needed in the morning.
  • Don’t pick at your bonds. Always have them taken care of by a professional. Failure to do so can lead to you snapping your hair and possibly losing it.

AFTERCARE PRODUCTS

Your hair is made up of keratin, which is then treated with a system of natural oils called “sebum”. Your natural hair is coated with sebum, which can be removed by brushing. Hair Extensions can disrupt this natural process, so you may need a little more help:

  • A conditioning serum is the best way to moisturize your Hair Extensions. A good quality oil or oil combination will absorb into your hair and create a silky appearance. However, oils on their own can form a barrier that gives you silky-smooth results.
  • Avoid using hair oils close to your roots and bonds. Use a small amount at the ends of Hair Extension. To prevent product buildup, ensure that the oil is thoroughly washed.
  • Before styling, make sure you use a heat protector compatible with Hair Extensions.

*IMPORTANT NOTICE* Certain brands of ARGAN OIL may cause hair extensions to become discoloured. Avoid using Argan oil and be aware of the possible appearance of orange tones. If this occurs, you should stop using it.

Pure Argan oil can be too heavy to use for hair extensions. Most high-quality brands use a mix of Argan oil with conditioners in their “Argan Oil”. These products can contain high amounts of silicones or artificial colours, which can lead to hair extensions becoming dry and discoloured. Our Aftercare Products line includes a Blonde Friendly Argan Oil that won’t stain your Hair Extensions.

When you are swimming in the ocean or in the pool, it is important to keep your hair extensions dry. Your extensions will be severely damaged by chlorine and salt. Some chemicals in swimming pools can cause hair extensions to turn pink, green, or orange by reacting with lighter hair extensions. If necessary, use a swimming cap and/or conditioner to protect your hair.

You should wash your hair extensions immediately after you accidentally get chlorine or seawater on them. Never allow the pool water or seawater to dry on them. If Hair Extensions are left tied up in this way, they will likely matt.

Malibu C products are available on our website to help with discolouration. However, they are not 100% effective. Prevention is better than treatment. Customers often take with them the Malibu C Hard Water Shampoo and Conditioner Set, which contains 4 treatment sachets.

This kind of discoloration is not covered by any exchanges or refunds. The above advice does not reduce the likelihood of it happening.

COLOURING HAIR EXTENSIONS

Most hair extensions shades will fade over time and require recolouring. It is not advised to colour hair extensions at home. Hair extensions have been through extensive processing. It is difficult to lighten hair extensions’ colour. Although extensions can be dyed to a darker color with semi-permanent colour homes at a salon, this should only ever be done by an experienced professional who is skilled in colouring extensions. It is not a good idea to bleach hair extensions in a lighter shade. This can cause damage and may not remove the colour completely. They can only safely be toned darker.
