Q: Hello I’m interested in becoming a topper. This will be my first topper ever, and I’m not sure about what they’re all about and whether it is suitable for me?

What is a hair-topper?

Hair toppers are pieces of hair that is sometimes referred to as a half wig and is placed onto one’s head, to protect your head from the beginning, mid and even the advanced stages of loss of hair. They can be fixed to your hair with Velcro clips, clips, or adhesive. Hairpieces, or toppers, can be permanently attached to your hair in a variety of ways through a hair replacement technician in the salon.

Hair toppers vary in size , starting with a tiny thin area of 2.75 5 inches in size and up to mid top loss of hair that begins around 5 x 5 inches and on to advanced all-over the loss in hair of 11. x 11 inches.

Q What is the base that the top of your hair constructed from?

Hair toppers can be constructed using a variety of materials. The most well-known is mono tops and lace tops, fronts, as well as silk bases.

Polyurethane Edge Front, Mono Top as well as Wefted Sides, Jon Renau Top Wave

The most common material used is polyurethane edging with monofilament (mono top) the fabric’s centers. There are wefts that may be on the sides and the back edges similar to a wig that a machine might include.

Mono Top and Wefted Sides,

Also, toppers (and hair wigs) that have a thin mesh fabric on the front of the wig to help make a natural hairline, or a part of.

If the sheer mono, or front material lies on the scalp it appears as if the hair is growing outside of the head. These hairpieces may include hand-tied hair fibers on the hairline, in the center, and occasionally the area around the part. Below are more details on lace fronts.

Silk Top,Hair Topper (my top choice)

Another alternative are silk toppers with base and hairpieces. They’re not sheer, however the silk appears to be an actual piece of the top. It appears as if it’s growing from your scalp and is virtually unnoticeable. The base is beige or brown and is tied by hand or weaved on the edges.

The toppers are made to sit more comfortably on top of the head. Some are equipped with combs, clips, or elastic bands (like an elastic hairband) that secures it around your head as an halo-style hairpiece.

Q: What kinds of hair fibers are hair toppers created of and what exactly does Heat Defiant mean?

The kinds of hair fiber used for toppers and wigs include synthetic, heat-resistant, or human hair.

The hair that is heat-friendly or” hair is styled using hot irons such as curling irons or flat irons. I wrote an in-depth article on the styling and care of hair that is heat resistant. It is a high-maintenance fiber however it has the closest thing to human hair that you could find. It is a popular choice among customers since there is any wig shine to this hair.

Synthetic hair fibers are similar in material as heat defiant. However, it’s not as heat-resistant and may melt if hot appliances are placed on it. Particular care must be taken when using this kind of fiber. It is possible to make sure to wet the fiber before rolling it on rollers , then apply a cloth steamer or a low-temperature hot airbrush to create or remove curl. This is the most popular fiber that is used in wigs.

Human hair is treated as hair that you have. Be sure to read the instructions of the manufacturer for changing hair’s color using hair dye or bleach. For the majority of hair topper companies, only human hair can be colored. The majority of human hair is darkened by adding the color of hair.

Human hairpieces are thought of as the best hair accessories and are quite expensive. They range between $300-1500.00 or more.

Human and synthetic hair blends aren’t so common, however it is a viable alternative. You must be very careful when using this blend of fiber. Heating can cause the synthetic to become frizzy. Personally, I would prefer both. I’ve seen it done as custom-made pieces in which the gray is synthetic.

Q: What is the density of my hair? Do I need a topper for my hair?

It is important to consider hair density when selecting the right hair topper. If this is your first time, toppers start with a low or light density, and then begin to increase the density. If you’ve been losing hair gradually over a long period, you’ve forgotten how it is to feel to have a large amount of hair on the head.

One of my first toppers was Belle Tress Top Wave Topper with Heat Defiant and it’s a topper with a low density of hair. I believe it’s about 90-100% in terms of hair density. It was a perfect match for my hair. perfectly, making it almost invisible to others. After about a year of wearing it I was ready to increase my density.

My advice: Start with an ice cream topper that is low density at the beginning while you’re getting used to all things. You can then work your way up. I currently wear 130 percent density that’s pretty close to the volume of the bio hair I have.

Q: Would an extra layer help my hair loss?

My issue is that I’m experiencing thinning throughout my scalp, however, my sides and back of my head are sturdy. I decided to go with the 6x 6.5 inches base for my very first topper and it turned out fantastic. I’ve tried smaller bases of 5 inches and they worked, but I prefer the greater coverage of the 6 inch base. With a bigger base, the clips were more tucked away in the sides and felt more comfortable. I felt a lot of stress on my thin bio hair.

To determine whether a topper is suitable for you, first determine the extent of loss. Hair loss is unique for each person or it could be due to an illness that causes your hair to be shed in sections or in patches. If you are in the early stages, and you feel that your area is becoming thinner, you may want to consider the smallest 2.75 5 inches x 2.75 inches part topper.

Q: How do I CHECK FOR THE SIZE I’ll need a topper?

If you notice that your hair is becoming thinner across your hairline and crown take a tape measurement and determine the size of the area you wish to protect.

image 13

Take measurements from left to right, and from front to back from the front of your head. Be sure to leave an additional one or two inches in the front and sides to allow you to attach clips to your strong bio hair.

The larger toppers such as 9 x 9 to x 11 are about the size of a complete hairstyle. Some people who wear a topper prefer a big topper that has clips, instead of an entire wig. Some choose to go straight to a wig when their loss is rapid and bio hair can no longer take the pressure of clips.

image 14

The next step is to take a measurement of how long your hair is. When you purchase a hair topper you must buy one that is at least 2 inches larger than the bio hair. From the crown, measure to the bottom back in your hair.

There are some toppers which are shorter and designed to fill in the crown that is shorter to mid-length hair. From the crown, measure to the layer you’re trying to get to for size.

Q Should I choose a POLYURETHANE OR LACER FRONT TOPER?

Many people who wear toppers are just beginning to lose their hair, but have some hairline to use. Personally, I put my topper on top of my hairline, and then utilize my hairline to blend into the edge of the topper’s front. Polyurethane fronts work when you have sufficient hairline.

Certain poly fronts feature little lacing that is sewn on onto the edge of the front. It could be fine enough to create a lovely hairline. Your choice is yours.

When your hairline appears thin, an alternative is to choose a lace front-topper and then use the sheer of lace to make a brand new hairline. You can apply an adhesive to ensure that the front edge line up against your scalp. Personally, I prefer both the lace fronts and those with poly fronts. The details are in the next paragraph.

Q Is there a shade of Topper or Wig I need to buy?

It’s one of the most difficult questions to be able to… new buyers should choose what is closest to their natural hair as they adjust to wearing your hair again. It’ll be less obvious when you transition from a non-topper user to full on wearer.

Once you’re used to wearing hair , the sky’s the only limit to the color! I have light browns and light blondes as well as all the way to platinum-colored toppers that I wear.

Once you’ve found the right size, you can begin looking around for an item that works for you! Yay!

I would suggest going to Youtube.com and typing the color’s name or code into the search box. There are tons of videos that review every topper and wig colors show up. Warning! Here is the place where addiction gets started and it’s a lot of fun. All of them look stunning, it’s hard to pick only one.

The majority of wig shops have a customer service rep who will help you find the right color when you call or send them an email. Additionally, they have colored rings that you can buy or even lend the rings to customers.

Q: Do you know of an authentic wig shop that you can purchase from?

The world of wigs is filled with fakes and charlatans who are trying to steal money from genuine sellers of wigs. #1 Do not purchase a wig through a Facebook advertisement for $39.99. They are scams and you’ll be scammed. If the price appears too appealing to be true It is! Do not purchase it.

Q: However, I have my favorite wig Youtube Reviewer on the photo of the wig and it appears to be real ….

It is possible to find fake wig stores that use popular wig reviewers’ images to market their fake and fake wigs. This is a major issue within the wig business. To be sure, purchase only from legitimate sites you have a good understanding of.

What I’m looking for in a store is genuine reviews of wigs. One quick Google search for the shop’s names and their reviews can give an idea of whether they are genuine. Here’s where I shop.

  • Wigs.com
  • Wigoutlet.com (This website is Wigs.com Clearance shop)
  • WigStudio1.com (They offer a wonderful clearance section on their website)
  • Cysterwigs.com
  • WigCloseouts.com ( It’s Cysterwigs Clearance shop)
  • PinkeePromise.com
  • Hairstyles Highline AKA ToppersbySharon.com

Q: I purchased a topper then how do you apply it?

As I said earlier, if you have a thick but thin hairline, like mine I put the topper about 1 inch in front of my hairline. If you’re trying to recreate an non-existent hairline, you’ll need to put the topper directly on top or just further in front of the area where your hairline used to be.

Q: What happens if I do not know the location of my hairline before?

Here’s an awesome trick: Use one hand, the palm, and close all four of your fingers (no thumb). When your hand is closed, place your pinky at the edge of your eyebrow . And on top of the four fingers, is when your hairline begins.

Q: How can I prepare my bio hair prior to applying the Hair Topper?

Before I put the topper on, I prepare the bio hair. It is my job to blow-dry and straighten my current hair first. After that, using a rattail comb, I cut approximately one quarter inch off my hairline, straight over my face. Then I apply The L’Oreal Magic Color Cover Up spray to cover the small area behind the hairline. Comb my hair in the front to spray.

Additionally, you can utilize filled-in fiber concealers as well as dark eyeshadows or any other makeup products specifically designed for covering the scalp. It is a way to make it appear thicker to hide the thinness of your hairline and temple.

Then, I grab a comb and tease or backcomb my hair along both sides of my head , where the clips are set to attach to my hair. After teasing , I spray those areas with a generous amount of hairspray strong. Allow the dry areas to completely dry. The spraying and tugging of hair will secure the clips and give them a firm grip.

Q How do I put the head topper?

image 15

Turn the top upside down and take off all clips. Reverse it to smooth it back. Secure the front two clips and then place the edge on the front of the topper right behind the hairline in front.

Check that the topper is placed in the proper position. Scoop and then push the combs into the hair. Clip the front clips until they’re securely. Then , clip the rest of the clips in the hair. Sometimes, it takes a few attempts to find the right positioning.

Q: What if the TOPPER DOES NOT BLEND with my BIO hair in the front?

The most common problem when using toppers is the front edge is too far back or not merging in with front hair. Adjust the topper to move it to the front. Sometimes, turning the topper toward the side will help.

My Tips and the most common most frequently asked question by beginners when they first start: If the front edge of the topper shows the fabric underneath or is too separated at the front edge of the topper A quick spray with Loreal color spray will cover the fabric that is visible on the edge.

Certain wearers prefer using hair holders made of Velcro to ensure that their toppers lay flat on their front. The velcro is sewn into an edge of the item, and it will lay down so that it holds the hair in place and is laid flat. This is an excellent solution for front edges of poly in case you’re having difficulty lifting the front edge or if you’re susceptible to clipping.

Q How do I adhere THE FRONT OF MY LACE TO MY hairline?

image 16
image 16

I like the look of front-facing lace toppers. I like to wear my hairline towards the front. I have not had any issues with it lifting as long as they are secured to the sides with enough force. If you’re using the lace this way but you are worried about it lifting up, then you can stitch a clip into the front, about 1/8 inch from the edge.

If you’re using the lace to cover a nonexistent hairline, you can be able to leave it loose as long as it is snugly positioned to your hairline, or you might wish to attach it to your skin. Many lace front wearers experience excellent results by applying 3 coats Got2B Glued Gel on the skin. Dry it and then apply the lace onto the skin.

There are many other glues designed for lace fronts, ranging from the liquid adhesive for brushing up to extremely strong tape. It is advised to research which ones are the best. You’ll want the strongest hold that doesn’t harm the delicate lace.

I would suggest looking on Youtube.com for instructional videos on how to apply Got2B gel as well as other adhesives for most effective results. There are plenty of talented wig vloggers on YouTube with tutorials and video tutorials on fronts of lace.

Q: What do I do… should I buy the Topper as well as a Wig?

image 17

A wig offers complete head coverage , while hair toppers cover only one specific region. Toppers for hair clip into the existing hair , and wigs cover all the scalp and are held by hair grips.

Hair toppers and wigs are made of human or synthetic hair and they are both offered in a variety of styles and colors.

So , what do you think you should pick? Hairstyles or toppers? That’s a question only you know the answer to. Some people like the appearance of wigs on toppers. Many wear toppers in summer to help keep cool, while others wear wigs in winter months when temperatures aren’t as bad.

There are many reasons to switch between different things. You must determine the one that works best for you and is what makes you happy.

My suggestion: If you have thick bio hair, consider first with a topper. If you’re suffering from an abundance of loss of hair all over, you may want to consider the largest topper. However, if the bio hair you have isn’t strong enough to support clips, then go with the hair.

I have both. I wear them both regularly. human hair topper, and I wear a bob wig that is short. I was not looking to cut my hair to ensure I wear a wig, but wear a short bob.

Q: Okay I’ve picked a wig, which size should I choose and how do I get it to hold it in place?

Q: How can I determine my head’s the size of your wig?

The first thing you need to do prior to purchasing the wig is to determine the size of your head. Here’s a fantastic chart that includes a video to help you get going.

A majority of people will use the wig cap for covering the rest of the bio hair. This helps the wig to stay on the head. Most wigs are made of pantyhose-like material.

Some people don’t wear caps, however, when your hair is shorter there’s no need to wear a cap. I prefer a gripping headband specifically designed for wigs, to fix the wig on my head.

Wig grip headbands are made of silicone and the soft material. The band is placed around your hairline, and then under the nape of your head and it is secured by Velcro. The wig will grip the band to hold it in its place. My personal favorite is a silicone headband, known as The Wig Fix. It’s super solid and clear, so it doesn’t show through your hair!

Question: May I bring the top layer for my stylist to have it cut? Can it be color-coded?

Yes you can send your topper to a stylist. Be sure to inform her that when she cuts the topper, it’s permanent the hair won’t be able to grow back! It is recommended to bring it to a stylist for wigs or a salon for hair toppers.

If it is made of human hair, it is possible to color it. You should be cautious about the base of polyurethane and the sheer mono tops. They will take the color of the base hair color that is used when processing. It can change to the color of burgundy or purple, and be visible in the hair. It’s permanent. It is not fixable or cleaned off.

My advice: Take your topper with you to a wig specialist or stylist who is used to working with wigs or toppers. I’ve seen many people ruining great pieces of work in the process of trying to repair it by themselves.

Once you’re comfortable with wigs , toppers and wigs they can take into your lives. It’s quite liberating to have your ideal hair when you’ve lost your hair in a devastating way. It’s the first step in the world of wigs, which is the most frightening. Toppers are an excellent introduction piece to help you get to where you want to be.

My must-do! To join a wig group or loss of hair group on Facebook. I’ve learned a lot from other wig wearers . I am a hair tech! Facebook groups are an excellent way to connect with others who are dealing with the same type of hair loss as you do. You’ll be happy that you joined the group and realize you’re not the only one fighting the fight against loss of hair.

There are also a lot of hair wig “buy or sell” groups on Facebook. If you’re looking to test a hair-topper or a wig , you could find a cheap and gently used alternative to experiment with. It is possible to start with me by joining the Wig Revival Buy Sell & Trade Facebook Group.

Q What is your most-loved Synthetic or human hair product?

  • My favorite human hair topper brand and wig is Highline Wigs by Sharon. Her mix made up of European Brazilian human hair is exactly as you would expect. No smells, tangles and a wide range of different colors to make a perfect match. She makes the most beautiful highlights in a variety of colors which are in line with the latest hairstyles.
  • My favorite heat-resistant synthetic hair is the result of a cross between Raquel Welch as well as Belle Tress. They’re really close. Belle Tress Toppers and wigs are not heavy and do not have too thick and there is no permatease. While Raquel Welch is on the thick to medium side. Raquel Welch’s hair and highlight shades are stunning.
  • My top synthetic hair brands include two European brands: Belle Madame and Ellen Wille. Their synthetic fiber is fine denier, and it actually feels and looks like human hair. The color options are beautiful too.
  • My favorite most robust synthetic fiber that is able to be beaten up is Noriko Milan topper. It is perfect for beach and biking! It’s a huge topper that is on the middle density side. It is tough and remains stunning.
